Dolphin Gargoyle Pendant

This fantastic and unique pendant is one of a brand new range of designs available exclusively from our supplier. The word gargoyle is derived from an old French 'gargouille' meaning throat, refering to their original function of keeping rain water off catherdrals in Medieval Europe. Gargoyles came into gothic architecture in the early 13th century. Gargoyles, also known as grotesques, in churches and cathedrals, also held the adiditional function of warding off evil spirits. Although commissioned to work in a Christian environment, many of the stone masons still held pagan folk beliefs common to all peasant folk of the time, and these beliefs are often reflected in their work. This pendant is a replica of an original gargoyle design found in Gothic architecture. It depicts a stylised dolphin, a creature commonly found in churches and as a protective symbol due to its reputation of saving people from drowning. Size 6cm long and 5cm wide, supplied with a generous length of tough waxed cord, a presentation case and a descriptive card.
